Surf Terminology: The Surf Dictionary | Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Glossary of Surfing

Surfing (particularly in Southern California) has its own slang, which has comingled with Valleyspeak. Words like "dude", "tubular", "radical", and "gnarly" are associated with both. One of the primary terms used by surfers around the world is the word "stoked". This refers to a mixed feeling of anxiety and happiness towards the waves breaking.
Surfers have often been associated with being slackers or 'beach bums' (with women being known as 'beach bunnies').
The shaka sign, associated with Hawaii, origins unknown,[19][20] is a common greeting in surfer culture.[18]

This Glossary of surfing includes some of the extensive vocabulary used to describe various aspects of the sport of surfing as described in literature on the subject.[1] [2] In some cases terms have spread to a wider cultural use. These terms were originally coined by people who were directly involved in the sport of surfing.

Rest In Peace: Jay Moriarity

Twelve Years Ago, Jay Moriarity died a day before his 23rd birthday on June 15, 2001, in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the island Lohifushi in the Malvides drowning in an apparent diving accident. In Lohifushi for an O'Neill photo shoot, he went free-divingalone but was not seen after. A search party recovered his body late Friday night. Moriarity left behind his wife Kim Moriarity. He was also a good sport and enjoyed working with his friends.

Jay Moriarty was a surfer from Santa Cruz, California who, as a surfer, made his reputation surfing Mavericks in Half Moon bay, California at the age of 16. He was made internationally famous when his wipeout at Mavericks was caught on film and made the cover of surfer magazine. Although a successful competitor, Jay is remembered as a soul surfer, winning many sportsmanship awards throughout his career.

Jay's life can be watched in the dvd "Chasing Mavericks" which shows the life of Jay as a fifteen year old kid, how he was saved by his mentor Frosty and how he got inspired by him to surf.
